How does it all work?

What books have you released lately? How'd it go?

Did you actually buy the book release products?

I print my own labels. There is a link on the site (on the left) for various ways to print them using regular paper (cut and scotch tape) or Avery-type special paper.

I have released over 700 books. Most of them diappeared into the ether, but enough have been registered to keep me going. Sadly, I've given some directly to friends that have never been registered! So I assume the books are still out there and who knows? Maybe they will show up some day.

I left one book at my Dr.'s office. It was finally registered as caught in Texas (I am in New Jersey) about 13 months later. I really wish I knew how it got there!

I got a request from a guy in Malasya and sent him 5 paperbacks. That's the farthest my books have traveled and, looking at the globe, about as far as they can go. At least until one shows up on the ISS. ;-)

    Hi Ellen,

I released a couple of non-fiction books in the last couple of weeks: Back to the Astronomy Cafe, and One Hundred Jobs. I released another book through my sister-in-law on New Year's -- she dropped it off at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. I had also released a book a few months ago, actually saw it picked up and taken but haven't had anyone register it yet.

I've also been printing out labels and affixing them, but wondered if some of the official release products might work better (as well as support the site). I bought the stamp and used it on the last two books. No results yet, and I'm not going to hold my breath, but I'm sure it will be a thrill if someone ever does register any of them.

I'm planning on going to Europe in September. Judging from the BookCrossing site, books seem to get around more there, so maybe I'll take a couple with me and see how that goes!

I have a few decent books that I can't sell because my dog, who is only two, has nibbled the covers. There was a time when he loved to sink his teeth into a good book. These days he is less literary, but prefers a nice roll of TP.

Fiber. I keep telling myself it's the fiber.

Anyway, if I repaired them, do you think it would be okay to release these, not dog-eared but, dog-chewed books?

        If they are readable, sure.

Also, you could offer them in the Wish List forum over at BookCrossing.com. I bet someone there would want them.

Not fiber, jealousy. My dog, a Rott/Shepard(?) cross, did that a couple of times after begging for attention. When I wouldn't stop reading to pet only him (vs. reading and petting @ the same time) he got mad. Later I walked away for a minute, book on the couch, and couldn't find it when I returned. He'd taken it to his bed and had a snack both times. Fortunately they were paperbacks.

Ah Francesca, you may have hit the nail on the head. Jealousy might explain why he always went for good books.

But how do you explain the toilet paper? Surely THAT can't be motivated by jealousy?!

I had a cat once who just liked seeing the paper unfurl. Polo (my current kitty) just wants to watch the water swirl down the bowl.

Ok, I am offically off topic. :-\

As the French say, Say la vi! I can't spell it. But speaking of cats and litature, I once knew a cat that would sit on your lap and make you hold the book so he could see the pages. We were never sure if he was reading, or just being a cat. Since T2 weighed close to 40lbs and killed racoons at will, he pretty much sat where and when he wanted.

As for the subject, well, I ordered a release kit 2 days ago, the midsized one. Did anyone else ever do so and if so, how long did it take to get to them. (I know,I know, I'm a tinsy bit impatient!):P

Every cat I ever had was an anti intellectual. They'd get between you & your reading material, not to read, just to block you from doing so.

                C'est la vie! (I think...)
