A couple of weeks ago, I was at a local community center, in the company of others who are also BookCrossers, and some who aren't. As we were heading home, one of my buddies saw a BC book sitting on a ledge. After we all looked it over, one of the guys was going to take it home for his spouse. Big fat BC sticker on the front cover, left in a public place, all seems kosher.
One of the community center staff came rushing up as we ambled away, frantically trying to rescue the book! Seems that the center got a phone call from a reader who had left the book behind and wasn't done with it and wanted it back! At this point, hilarity erupted while the BC types tried to explain the BC concept to the non-reading staff type.
We got her to read the sticker on the cover, and she was amazed and confused. We, being greedy book-gobblers, were sure that she must be mistaken about someone abandoning the book in error. That was when she explained about the caller who wasn't finished with the "released" book. End of story: we left the book with the staff member and asked her to explain the sticker to the reader.
Or maybe 'twas just me who finds it altogether hilarious, even after the fact. :-D
